SYNERGY BRASS QUINTET PLAYS FOR THE EARS AND EYES
The Hardwick Gazette, August 5, 2009

by David K. Rodgers The Altschuler-Mouffe Duo... gave a stimulating concert of works by
Spanish, Argentine, German, Italian and American composers. Emil Altschuler on violin and
Jérôme Mouffe on guitar gave full display, of their consummate musicianship, with some truly
virtuosic playing on their respective instruments...

... The Remembrances Of The Alhambra by Francisco Tarrega(1854-1909) evokes that
extraordinary work of architecture in Grenada, which is so beautiful... even the religious
fanatics of the Reconquest (who finally expelled the Moors in 1492) could not bring themselves
to destroy it...Mouffe played this piece with remarkable technical skill, keeping two lines going
at once, a shimmering continuo and the lyric, giving the aural illusion of two guitars.

..The highpoint of the evening was the History Of The Tango by Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992).
Both musicians took the opportunity to show their superb bowing and fingering in this very
challenging work. Descending arcs of melody of great lyrical beauty embody the inherent
male/female tension and drama of this music, which requires a precise physical coordination
unlike any other dance (without which serious injury could occur!) Altschuler and Mouffe's
own coordination was spectacular, with sensitive phrasing and a depth of feeling in their
touch. They really made their instruments sing so there were many moments when one hung
on each note. A brilliant performance of a brilliant piece of music!
